Vineyards and Wine

The bio-physical characteristics of the territory where Santar lies and its solar exposure have long determined the prevalence of viticulture in this region.

What sets it apart from other wine regions is the way in which the vine is framed by the landscape.

Wine growing estates in this region follow a geometric pattern that could be described as a formal garden. Laid out in a mosaic pattern, the vine is framed by hills on the horizon, and is always sided by stone walls or rustic, religious or manorial constructions, endowing it with great scenic impact.

Although the population is aging and feels the effects of emigration, the people of Santar have been able to preserve many of their customs. The cultural expression of this community – strongly determined by lives of winegrowing and agricultural work – is closely connected to the various steps of the wine production process, to the work on the fields and to the Church. This is exemplified by the merry grape harvest feasts and the processions held during Holy Week up to Easter Sunday.

The conjunction of all these factors – natural landscape, river basin, terroir, noble and ecclesiastical buildings, archaeological remains, geometry of the vineyards, habits and traditions linked to wine – offers this territory a unique, identity-filled narrative capacity.

The Dão region stands out due to the irregular nature of its relief, which causes marked microclimatic variations of great import to viticulture and the qualities of wine. Bound by high granite mountains on three sides - Serra da Estrela, Serra do Caramulo, and Serra da Nave -, the region is sheltered from the influence of the Atlantic Ocean. Summers are dry and warm, while winters are cold and rainy, with a big thermal amplitude. The soil is sandy, originating from granite and shale, and well drained. All these factors favour the production of high-quality wines.

Santar Vila Jardim, made up of the main farms in Santar, Casa dos Condes de Santar e Magalhães, Casa das Fidalgas, Casa Ibérico Nogueira e Casa da Magnólia sought to conjugate the best Dão grapes with their optimum location, thus creating vineyard gardens: “Perfect Terroirs” to give expression to the Dão region.

Originating from the garden of Casa das Fidalgas, made from Touriga Nacional, Alfrocheiro Preto and Alicante Boushet grape variety, it has an intense ruby colour. Very fine and delicate in aroma, prevailing notes of bergamot and red fruits. It holds a velvety feel that perfectly reflects the barrel stages, highlighting the floral taste of the grape varieties to show the virtues of this specific terroir that gives it great complexity and longevity.




Originating in its essence from the Magnolia Garden, made with the Encruzado and Malvasia Fina grape variety, this wine has aromas of white fruit and citrus. Good volume in tasting, sustained by a good mineral freshness, that mirrors its gastronomic aptitude.




Originating in its essence from the garden of Casa de Santar e Magalhães, made with Touriga Nacional and Alfrocheiro Preto grape variety. Violet tones emphasize the intense red colour. The complexity of its aroma reveals intense fruit in which the bergamot and blackberry intersect in the wood’s spice. In the tasting, velvety tannins and good acidity. Long and unforgettable finishings.
